Local Attractions

Our volunteers have access to a wide range of local destinations to explore. With plenty of time around your volunteer schedule the world is your oyster!

Beautiful landscapes at your doorstep

Accra is the vibrant and buzzing capital of Ghana. Here with us you can discover the richness of the city’s culture, treasured heritage sites and beautiful weekend destinations - all on your doorstep!

Around the volunteer work schedule, you’ll have plenty of free time to either relax or to travel, explore and discover. Our volunteer coordinators facilitate a variety of after-work or weekend excursions, both around the local area and trips further afield.

Things to do in Accra

Accra is the vibrant and buzzing capital of Ghana. Here with us you can discover the richness of the city’s culture, treasured heritage sites and beautiful weekend destinations - all on your doorstep!

Some of the local attractions include:

Labadi & Kokrobite Beach

Enjoy some downtime at one of the many golden beaches along Ghana’s stunning coastline. Perfect for time after work and at the weekends to relax, unwind and top up the tan!

Cultural Exploration

Learn more about the country’s history and traditions by visiting the numerous cultural sites in Accra and Kumasi, such as the museum of the first president of Ghana.

Places to Eat

Accra has a wide variety of food destinations, ranging from local stalls and traditional cuisine to beachside restaurants that are perfect for a relaxing social evening.

Nightlife

Plenty of local bars and nightclubs are available to explore in the evenings to help unwind after a busy week!

Swimming and Sports

Make use of the pool facilities at the Silicon Valley complex. There’s often a game of football or basketball going on at one of the local playing fields as well which you can get involved in.

Running and Hiking

Saturday mornings are the perfect time to hike to the top of the mountain in Aburi, where you’ll be met with stunning views over the whole of Accra and surrounding luscious countryside.

Aburi Botanical Gardens

These gardens, just outside of Accra and only 15-30 minutes away from the volunteer house, offer the rare luxury of feeling cut off from civilisation.

Weekend BBQs

Enjoy a welcome treat with our team at Labadi beach! These are great social events and are often put on to say thank you and goodbye (but hopefully not for the last time!) to some of our cherished volunteers.

Ideas Further Afield

Pre-booking for weekend trips is not required, but it is useful to have a think about which ones you’d like to do before travelling out and then let our coordinators know what you’re interested in doing when you arrive, so they can organise a group trip. These experiences are always better when shared!

Cape Coast

One of the favourite destinations among our volunteers, Cape Coast offers the chance to explore the colonial history of the ‘Gold Coast’ with a tour around its slave trade castle. Venture onto suspended canopy walks at Kakum, where you can enjoy stunning views of the rainforest, and live with crocodiles at Hans Cottage – not for the faint hearted!

Prices are from £15/night. We recommend budgeting £75 for the whole trip.

Mole National Park

Take an extended weekend to make the most of this incredible destination, a truly wild safari nestled in the Northern part of Ghana! See elephants, monkeys and crocodiles up close whilst staying in the heart of the park. You’ll get the chance to choose from a variety of safaris, including by river and at night (look out for the glittering eyes of the bush babies!).

We’ve also managed to drastically reduce the time it takes to get there by securing an agreement with domestic airlines – so you can enjoy more time at Mole and will be saved the 10 hr bumpy coach journey!

Lake Bosomtwi

Enjoy a tranquil and invigorating weekend at the luscious lakeside of Lake Bosomtwi, just over an hour’s drive from Kumasi. Situated within an ancient meteorite impact crater, it is a popular destination for its beaches, bars and surrounding hills to explore. Swim or hire a boat to venture out onto the lake.
